AN ASHBOURNE YEOMAN MISSING
“The parents of Trooper Joseph Barnes 1602, of the Derbyshire Yeomanry, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Barnes, of Ashbourne, and formerly of Mappleton, are desirous of obtaining information regarding their son, who has officially been reported as missing since August 21st. There have been so many reports during the past few weeks that Trooper Barnes’ friends are naturally very anxious, and they will be glad if the relatives of other yeomen who may have received any communication in which reference is made to Trooper Barnes, will assist in elucidating the mystery. It is understood that three other yeomen are missing, and it is surmised that these were in the same engagement as Trooper Barnes.”

“Trooper Joseph Barnes, of the Derbyshire Yeomanry, regarding whose fate in the Dardanelles had given great anxiety to his father and mother, who carry on business in Church-street, Ashbourne, has now been officially reported killed, having previously been described as missing…..The deceased trooper was reared in the village of Mappleton, near Ashbourne, where his parents then lived, and where, as in other parts of the neighbourhood, the news of the gallant young fellow’s death will be received with much regret.”
